Maria Island

Once upon Maria

An enjoyable day visit to a small island, off the Tasmanian east coast, which has a fascinating mix of history, wildlife and pristine coastal beaches.

  • Travel to the town of Triabunna passing through small coastal resorts and fishing towns along the way, and board a ferry for the trip across to Maria Island observing the sealife, including dolphins, as you cruise.

  • Enjoy an encounter with some of the wildlife, take a stroll along the beautiful sandy beaches, explore the rock pools and swim or snorkel in the clear blue water in the marine section of the park (Bring your own snorkelling gear).

  • Take a short walk to either the Fossil Cliffs or Painted Cliffs to witness the fascinating and unique geology of Maria Island. Both these walks are moderate with no steep access.

  • Browse amongst the many buildings of the earlier history of Maria Island including the commissariat store and penitentiary from the days of the penal colony in 1825 to the Grand Hotel and Coffee Shop of a later period.
