Food and Wine

Steele's Island Retreat offers guests a variety of options with regard to the service of food and alcoholic beverages.

Self Catering

The Island's homestead has a delightful, spacious, fully equipped country kitchen, a true chef's delight, in which guests can prepare meals. It contains three electric ovens, a microwave and convection oven, three fridges, two freezers, a gas cook top, dishwasher, a huge kitchen table, all the modern kitchen appliances you could need, together with ample crockery, cutlery, utensils, serving bowls and platters.

There are a number of attractive, timber outdoor settings, as well as a supply of folding, timber chairs and trestle tables to cater for the additional indoor and outdoor dining needs for guests wishing to cater for a special function whilst staying on the Island. Two barbecue areas on either side of the homestead, overlooking the water, provide shaded areas for cooking. Tablecloths are also provided.

Whilst the Island is somewhat secluded, it is also centrally located.  Groceries and alcoholic beverages can be purchased locally from the small supermarket and delicatessen, butcher and pubs, all just minutes away, which operate seven days a week.  The local bakery is well known for its tasty pastries, wide range of fresh bread, crusty rolls and mouth watering pizzas. The local Dodges Ferry Café and Bar, Lewisham Tavern and Forcett Golf Club Restaurant each offer a variety of delicious menus, whilst the popular ‘Dodgy Café’ at Dodges Ferry provides tasty take-away meals and Eftpos facilities.  The Mullet Café overlooking Park Beach is another delightful local eatery offering delicious meals.

Guests can collect their own oysters from the oyster beds located in the shallow water at the southern end of the Island during low tides, or enjoy a meal at the very popular Barilla Bay Oyster Farm and Restaurant just fifteen minutes away.

Fine award-winning wines can be purchased from a number of wineries in the nearby Coal Valley region, approximately 30 minutes away, and appetites can be appeased through tasty Tasmanian produce available at a range of eateries situated within easy driving distance of the Island.  A range of fruit, which can be freshly picked at the Sorell Fruit Farm, ten minutes away, provides a delicious sweet.

All functions held in the Beach Homestead by houseguests require the approval of management.  A ‘Facility Fee’ or ‘Day Visitor Fee’ applies to guests who are not staying on the Island, but who are attending functions organised by houseguests.

The retreat can cater for guests in the homestead and has a variety of appetising and varied menus to suit any occasion, theme, taste and budget.  An extensive vegetarian menu is also available.

All functions held by guests in the Beach Homestead must have the approval of management.  A ‘Facility Fee’ or ‘Day Visitor Fee’ is charged for guests attending functions who are not staying as houseguests. Minimum accommodation/guest numbers/prices apply.

Outsourced Catering

Guests may wish to have a particular caterer provide for them during their stay, or for their special function.  Arrangements can be made for the caterer to visit the homestead prior to the function to inspect the facilities.
