Coal River Valley and Richmond

The Coal River Valley, just twenty minutes from Hobart and fifteen minutes from Steele’s Island, is a picturesque agricultural and viticultural region with some of the most expansive panoramic scenery in the state. Several of the state’s best wine makers are in this area and are producing sought after, award-winning wines.

A ‘General Interest Day Tour Itinerary’, consisting of a selection of the activities below, is available. Alternatively, a complimentary itinerary can be designed for special interest groups or for those who previously have visited some of the attractions. All packages are designed to suit your budget.

  • Visit Richmond, an historical village nestled in the valley and one of the oldest towns in Tasmania, which is certainly worth exploring.  Twenty five kilometres and ‘one hundred years’ from Hobart City, it is a fine example of Georgian architecture and memories of days gone by. It is a legacy of Australia’s colonial past as a key military post and convict station, strategically located between Hobart and the infamous Port Arthur Penal settlement. The historic buildings, beautifully preserved, are now B & B’s and self-contained cottages, village shops, restaurants and tea-rooms. It’s craft shops and galleries showcase Tasmania’s best paintings, ceramics, glassware, woodturning and country style clothing.   Here you can visit Australia’s oldest bridge, the convict gaol, and Old Hobart Town and a model of Hobart in the 1820s.
  • Enjoy a visit to one of the thirty vineyards in the valley to learn about the methods and styles of wine production, particularly in small wineries, including a delightful indulgence in wine tasting.
  • Participate in an informative shore based guided tour of Barilla Oyster Farm to see their world class facilities and taste the quality of their oysters.
  • Visit Sorell Fruit Farm “a deliciously perfect Tasmanian orchard experience” where you can pick your own fruit and sample delicious jams, sauces and fruit wines and liqueurs.
  • Redbanks Fish and Field Estate which offers activities such as; Fly and Lure Fishing, Archery, Pheasant Shooting, Clay Target Shooting, Aqua Golf, Small Bore Rifle Shooting and Four Wheel Driving.  All equipment is available for hire, no licenses are required and tuition is provided for all activities.
  • Rotor Lift Helicopter – take flight on a rush of a different kind! Leave from the Island’s very own helipad or from Rotor Life Headquarters near the airport, just twenty minutes from the Island, and fly to any destination in Southern Tasmania
